The Ohio Association of Naturopathic Medicine (OANM) is a not-for-profit trade
organization representing the interests of practitioners and patients of naturopathic medicine.

OANM Proposed Legislation
The OANM is proposing legislation for the licensure of Naturopaths as a means of ensuring that there will be alternative sources available to the public, guaranteeing that every citizen of Ohio will have the "RIGHT TO CHOOSE" the type of treatment they wish to use.

The public has increasingly sought out alternative sources of treatment and it is our duty to ensure they receive the proper care. Licensure will provide the following:

  • Public Trust - Licensure will protect the public by ensuring treatment by practitioners who have received standardized education and continuing education, thus providing the best possible care.

  • Legal Conduct and Competent Practice - Licensure provides a process to retract licensure of a Naturopath who proves to be morally, ethically or clinically corrupt.  Additionally, licensure permits discipline of those who have overstepped the legal boundaries of the profession.

  • Mandatory Education - Licensure promotes standardized curriculum, consistent with the Naturopathic scope of practice, in programs offered throughout the state.  Graduates of these programs will then be eligible for licensure through the regulatory board authorized by this bill.  Licensure ensures that naturopaths will be current on all procedures and materials within their established scope of practice by obtaining the requisite number of hours of continuing education credits per biennium.

  • Tracking - Licensure will allow the state to develop a current list of Naturopaths, as well as future changes in their address and place of employment.  This is an invaluable tracking tool for the state board as well as the Naturopathic practitioner.

  • Reducing Fraud - Licensure ensures that people will no longer be able to practice illegally as Naturopaths if they have not met the requirements of licensure for the state
